Hampton Pool was originally opened by the local authority in 1922.
It was enlarged and improved over the years, with the current buildings erected in 1960. Sadly, after the summer season in 1980, the pool was deemed financially unviable and it was closed, the site left to languish unloved for four years.
Salvation came in the form of the local community, who launched the vigorous “Sink or Swim” campaign (later becoming the Hampton Pool Trust) to raise funds to reopen the facility. This was accomplished, with the local Council matching the campaign’s fund, and the Hampton Pool Trust was able to resurrect the pool site in 1985. Since then, Hampton Pool has been developed into a dynamic, inspirational community resource.
From the pools initial rescue and refurbishment in the early 1980s, through to the building of the teaching pool and gym in 1989, and the facilities ongoing upkeep and improvement- the trustees, management and patrons of Hampton Pool continue to extend their gratitude to the commitment of local volunteers and organisations who made it all possible.
We’re confident that with the continued enthusiasm and engagement of the Hampton community the future looks bright for Hampton Pool, which has become an icon not just in Hampton, but across Middlesex, Surrey and the wider South West London area.
We plan to continue the evolution of this unique amenity with its special ethos, which is so much more than just a local lido.
